World Record Holder at 800 Meters
Fiasconaro was raised in South Africa, and played rugby in his youth. He took to the track later in life and was a silver medalist at 400 meters in the 1971 European Championships as well as a bronze medalist in the 4x400 meter relay. In 1972, he set a world indoor record of 46.1 over 400 meters, but did not compete at the 1972 Olympics. In 1973, he set a world record of 1:43.7 over 800 meters, which would last until the 1976 Olympics, which Fiasconaro missed due to an achillies injury. After his track career, he played rugby for Milan before moving back to South Africa in 1978.
