1976 Olympic 5000 Meter Champion
At the 1972 Winter Olympics, Stensen won bronze medals in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He was second at the 1973 World Allround championships and took the title in 1974. He won the 1975 European Allround championships. In 1976, Stensen set a world record of 14:50.31 in January in Oslo, but could only capture the silver medal at 10,000 at the Olympics in Innsbruck. However, he did win gold medal in the 5,000 meters and set another 10,000 meter world record of 14:38.08 in Medeo. In 1977 he was World Allround bronze medalist, and took the European Allround silver in 1978.
